ANKARA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Former Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov, who was assassinated last year, was commemorated on Tuesday in the first anniversary of his death.

Alexei Yerkhov, Russian envoy to Turkey, and scores of officials and diplomatic representatives attended the commemoration ceremony held at the Russian embassy in Ankara and laid wreathes on Karlov's memorial.

Yerkhov said Russian parliamentarians and deputies from the country's State Duma were in Turkey to discuss counterterrorism issues, reported state-run Anadolu Agency.

Andrey Karlov was shot dead by an off-duty police officer as he was delivering a speech at an art exhibition in the Turkish capital on Dec. 19, 2016.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the killing as a "provocation" designed to undermine bilateral ties.

As part of the investigation into the assassination of Karlov, five people were arrested so far. Enditem
