MEXICO CITY, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 tourists traveling to the Mayan ruins in southeast Mexico died in an accident early Tuesday when their bus overturned, authorities said.

Many of the remaining 20 tourists were injured in the tragedy, which took place at 10 a.m. local time as the bus traveled along Mexico's Caribbean coast, near the resort of Mahahual in the state of Quintana Roo.

The tourists were all passengers from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship visiting the area. Among the passengers were Canadian and Italian nationals.

According to the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), the bus was operated by the Turismo Costa Maya company, and was taking the passengers to the ruins of Chacchoben, located some 70 km inland from the coast.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals in the town of Bacalar and the state capital Chetumal, said an initial report posted to the SSP's Facebook.

The bus driver was reported to have fled the scene of the accident, while private vehicles stopped to offer help to the victims, according to local reports. Enditem
