Nigerian leader approves tenure extension of military chiefs

ABUJA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian leader Muhammadu Buhari has approved a tenure elongation of the military chiefs, with emphasis on their contribution to the fight against terror group Boko Haram and other military operations across the country.

In a statement on Monday, minister of defense Mansur Dan-Ali said the tenure extension of the military chiefs, followed a careful review of the ongoing military operations and the successes recorded so far.

Specifically, Buhari took into consideration the efforts of the top military officers in the operations against Boko Haram in the North-East and the security situation in the Niger Delta region, Dan-Ali said.

The extension was pursuant to the powers conferred on the president by the Nigerian constitution, the defense official added.

Nigeria has made considerable gains against the terror group, dislodging its fighters from the Sambisa Forest, the group's largest training camp in the country, early this year. Enditem
