1st LD Writethru: Honduran President Juan Hernandez wins re-election

Xinhua,December 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

TEGUCIGALPA, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Honduras' Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) declared on Sunday incumbent President Juan Orlando Hernandez as winner of the Nov. 26 elections after defeating Salvador Nasralla from the opposition alliance.

Hernandez of the ruling National Party obtained 42.95 percent of the vote, while his main challenger Nasralla secured 41.42 percent, David Matamoros, president of the TSE, said in an official statement.

The vote has led to violent protests, with opponents of the president arguing that Hernandez's running for a second term was unconstitutional.

Nasralla, who accused Hernandez of electoral fraud, also declared victory in the election.

"The accompaniment of the observers mission from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union has been crucial to bringing about a transparent process," the TSE statement said. Enditem
