Philippine military says to recommend martial law nationwide if enemies "turn violent"

MANILA, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) high command hinted on Friday the possibility of extending the martial law in Mindanao across the Philippines if rebel groups "turn violent" and continue to sow terror to topple the government.

AFP chief Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero said the AFP's decision on whether to recommend a nationwide martial law to President Rodrigo Duterte depends "on the political situation" and "the reaction of our adversaries."

"If they turn violent, maybe the answer is obvious," Guerrero told a news conference at the main AFP headquarters.

However, Guerrero said that he would rather not talk about it because the issue is "speculative" at this point.

On Thursday, Duterte said the his administration is keeping its options on whether to limit martial law in Mindanao or to expand it to the entire country.

Duterte said his administration's decision will depend on the actions of "the enemies of the state."

Aside from the pro-IS militant groups in the southern Philippines, the government is also fighting the communist insurgents operating across the country and armed criminal groups, including drug syndicates. Enditem
