Construction director arrested for building collapse incident in Mexico quake

MEXICO CITY, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Police in Mexico City arrested the director of a construction project after the building collapsed in September's earthquake, killing two women, local prosecutor Edmundo Garrido announced on Monday.

The director, whose name was not made by public was charged with double homicide and authorizing a construction that did not meet regulations. He was linked to a building collapse on the street of Emiliano Zapata.

Garrido said that the building, which had 24 departments in two towers, was built with low-resistance structural elements that did not match what was listed in the blueprints. Furthermore, the type of cement used did not coincide with that recommended for the structure.

"On April 21, 2016, the arrested (person) notified (authorities) of the completion of the residential complex and sign the conclusion document," specified Garrido.

The arrest took place on Sunday and is the second linked to this building collapse, after another executive was arrested in October.

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck on Sept. 19 and killed 228 people in Mexico City after collapsing 38 buildings and damaging hundreds of others. Enditem
