Five killed, 14 others shot in Chicago over weekend

Xinhua,December 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

CHICAGO, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and 14 others wounded across Chicago from Friday afternoon to early Monday, according to data compiled by the Chicago Tribune.

With three weeks left in the year, Chicago has seen at least 636 homicides, trailing this time last year by 118 killings but still substantially above other recent years.

Data shows that in 2015 the city had recorded 467 homicides, in 2014 at least 416.

Meanwhile, the number of shooting victims reported by early Monday this year stands at 3,429 people, compared to 4,166 this time last year when violence reached levels not seen in two decades.

Chicago is considered the most gang-infested city in the United States with street gang shootings and retaliations being very common, especially in its south and west sides.

In 2016, Chicago recorded more homicides and shooting victims than New York City and Los Angeles combined, which prompted the Chicago police and civic organizations to join hands in curbing the gun-related crimes. Enditem
