Massive protest in Rabat to denounce U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital

RABAT, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched on Sunday in Morocco's capital Rabat to denounce the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The demonstrators chanted slogans against the U.S. and warned of the serious consequences of the U.S. decision on the regional and international stability.

The march was organized by the National Action Group in Support of Palestine and the Moroccan Association for the Support of the Struggle of the Palestinian People.

"The march is an opportunity to reiterate the stance of the Moroccan people in support of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people," said Khalid Soufiani, one of the organizers.

Soufiani underlined that this march reaffirmed that the issue of Jerusalem is a "red line" in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

He added that the Moroccans, together with other Arabs and Muslims, will continue their support for the struggle of the Palestinian people against the Israeli occupation.

The march came after a number of demonstrations and sit-ins held in several Moroccan cities since U.S. President Donald Trump officially announced his country's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and the start of moving the U.S. embassy there.

Trump's announcement drew widespread anger and criticism among the Palestinians as well as the Arabs and Muslims across the world.

Protests and demonstrations have been held in the Palestinian territories of West Bank and Gaza Strip as well as in many cities in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Israel seized control of East Jerusalem in 1967 and declared the city as its eternal capital in 1980, a move never recognized by the international community.

The Palestinians consider East Jerusalem as the capital of their future independent state. Enditem
