Police arrest drug smugglers, confiscate opium poppies in N. Afghan province

SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Police arrested two drug smugglers and confiscated 483 kg opium poppies from their possessions outside Shiberghan, capital of Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province on Sunday, provincial police chief Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani said.

According to the official, a patrolling police team found the opium poppies during their routine checking of a vehicle outside Shiberghan city early Sunday. They arrested two persons, including the driver.

Nearly 2.5 tons of illicit drug including opium poppies and hashish has been confiscated and 38 suspected drug traffickers have been arrested in Jawzjan province since early this year, the official added. Enditem
