WUHAN, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- A video showing a man with mobility difficulties crossing the road while vehicles patiently waited for him has gone viral in China.
The scene happened during rush hour on the afternoon Nov. 27 at a crosswalk on Yanjiang Road in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, local traffic police confirmed.
The middle-aged man took about 45 seconds to cross the 24-meter-wide road, which does not have traffic lights. Dozens of cars stopped and waited for him, according to police officer Liu Yu who witnessed the scene.
The video has been forwarded on China's social networking platforms and has been called evidence of the improved civic-mindedness of Chinese society.
A user nicknamed "Fengzhongyuli" wrote on Sina Weibo, "I was there that moment with my daughter and saw the heartwarming scene. Thumbs up to those drivers."
Another user, "Xiaoxin," posted that the 45-second wait was a result of China's long-term efforts to build culturally advanced cities.
According to China's traffic laws, vehicles should give way to pedestrians crossing the road when there are no traffic signals. However, many drivers still do not yield at pedestrian crossings. Enditem
