Libyan parliament urges UN mission to clarify position on political agreement

TRIPOLI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based parliament on Wednesday urged the UN Support Mission in Libya to clarify its position on the parliament's amendment of the political agreement.

The parliament threatens to take unilateral action if the mission cannot secure position.

The parliament addressed the UN mission and demanded it to determine position on the parliament-approved amendment.

It also asked for the mission's commitment to actions in case the other party continues to reject the initiative.

The parliament did not reveal the possible measures it would take in case its initiative was rejected by the rival Tripoli-based Higher Council of State.

The parliament approved two weeks ago a UN-proposed amendment formula to the current political agreement. However, the Higher Council of State rejected the amendment, and announced possibility of holding early elections within six months.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and political division.

The UN Mission has recently sponsored dialogue meetings in Tunisia between representatives of the Libyan political parties in order to amend the political agreement. Enditem
