Prison fire wounds five detainees in southern France

PARIS, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A fire which broke out at a jail in southern France on Monday night left five wounded with one in critical condition, local media reported on Tuesday.

Citing a source close to the investigation, BFMTV news channel said a 19-year-old inmate set his mattress on fire at around 21:15 local time (2015 GMT). His motive was not identified yet.

He was hospitalized in serious condition, it added.

Two other detainees and two supervisors were asphyxiated by smoke, but they are out of danger.

According to the report, the fire was swiftly brought under control and did not spread to other cells. Enditem
