Germany commits 81 mln euros to Rwanda's development

Xinhua, May 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

The German government on Thursday announced 81 million euros (about 90 million U.S. dollars) grant towards Rwanda's development programs over the next three years.

The announcement was made following intergovernmental negotiations between Germany and Rwanda government officials in Kigali.

The grant funding is under 2018-2020 cooperation framework, according to officials.

Andreas Gies, the Director General of Development Cooperation at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and development, said their objective is to invest in people, infrastructure, education and capacity building towards Rwanda's sustainable development.

During the past negotiations in 2014, Germany committed 69.5 million euro for the period 2015-2017.

The funding will be earmarked to Rwanda's priority areas including technical and vocational education and training, governance and decentralization, private sector development, youth employment and financial sector development, according to Rwanda's Finance Minister Claver Gatete.

Gatete said the cooperation of the two countries has facilitated capacity building for Rwandans. Endit
