Xinhua, May 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

Portuguese police seized 10 tonnes of hashish on Thursday in a fishing vessel in the Mediterranean Sea just outside the Strait of Gibraltar, according to Portuguese Lusa News Agency.

In a joint operation by the Portuguese police, navy and air force, the police found the hashish in 333 bales in a fishing vessel, which was intended to be distributed to several European countries.

The six people detained were aged between 20 and 61. Two of them were Portuguese, and were suspected of being part of a transnational criminal organization.

No weapons were found on board during the operation.

The operation is the result of a year-long investigation by the National Anti-Narcotics Drug Trafficking Unit (UNCTE), with the collaboration of Europol, the Maritime Analysis and Operations Center - Narcotics (MAOC-N) in Lisbon, and Spanish, French, Dutch, and Greek authorities.

According to Lusa, an investigation is ongoing to dismantle the entire network. Endit
