U.S. should replace presidential envoy for IS issue: Turkish FM

Xinhua, May 18, 2017 Adjust font size:

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday Brett McGurk, the U.S. special presidential envoy to the coalition against Islamic State, should be replaced, claiming McGurk supported Kurdish militants.

"Replacing McGurk would be beneficial," Cavusoglu told private broadcaster NTV in an interview on Thursday, after just returning from a visit with President Erdogan to Washington where they met President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

The minister's words came on the same day as McGurk was seen in a picture taken in northern Syria with a number of Kurdish militants currently being sought by Turkey through Interpol, local media reported.

Ankara regards the U.S.-backed Kurdish YPG military as offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant group.

McGurk was appointed by former U.S. President Obama and continue in his position in Trump's administration. Endit
