Japan's Panasonic recalls up to 280,000 tablet PC battery packs

Xinhua, May 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

Japan's electronic giant Panasonic Corp. announced on Tuesday that it will recall some 279,000 battery packs used in some of its tablet PC models following reports of multiple combustion cases.

The company said it had received 16 reports about the battery packs used in the Toughpad FZ-G1 tablets bursting into flames between March 2015 and April 2017, though no injury had been reported.

The root cause of this issue is contamination inside the battery cells and when the batteries in question are used in environment with wide temperature variation, a short circuit could occur and cause overheating and ignition, said the company.

Tablets with the battery packs in question have been sold in North America, Europe, Australia as well as in Japan, and the batteries will be collected and replaced free of charge to prevent future accidents, said the company.

Panasonic has recalled hundreds of thousands of battery packs for similar troubles over the past three years, said local reports. Endit
