Palestine president arrives in India on four-day visit

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in New Delhi on a four-day official visit to India, officials said Monday.

Abbas arrived with a delegation late Sunday to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote bilateral ties.

Officials from India's foreign ministry said this is the third state visit of President Abbas to India.

"The visit will provide an opportunity for reviewing the entire gamut of bilateral relations, Middle East Peace Process, regional and international issues," a foreign ministry official said. "MoUs on cooperation in various areas are expected to be signed during the visit."

Besides holding meetings with Indian president, prime minister, foreign minister and other dignitaries, Abbas will also visit the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Noida to forge cooperation between Palestine-India Techno Park being built by India in Palestine and Indian IT industry.

Indian officials said Abbas had held substantive meetings with Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2015.

"India and Palestine enjoy historically close and friendly ties. Apart from the political support to the Palestinian cause, India continues to support developmental projects in Palestine by extending technical and financial assistance," a statement issued by India's foreign ministry ahead of Abbas's visit said.

Abbas's India visit has come ahead of Modi's trip to Israel in July this year.

Modi will be the first Indian prime minister to travel to Israel.

Analysts view Abbas' visit as India's balancing act to its proximity to the Israel. Endit
