World champion Florence eliminated from Rio Pro

Hawaii's defending world champion John John Florence was eliminated from the Rio Pro World Surf League event in Brazil on Saturday after a surprise third-round loss to local hero Yago Dora.

Florence posted a combined-wave score of 10.16 while Yago registered 15.50 at Itauna beach in Saquarema, around 100km east of Rio de Janeiro.

"I was a little bit nervous and I only managed to regain my confidence when the heat started," Dora said. "The fans got behind me and it was incredible."

Four Australians progressed to the fourth round, with Adrian Buchan, Matt Wilkinson, Julian Wilson and Owen Wright all winning their heats on Saturday.

Their compatriots Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson enjoyed a rest day after booking places in the competition's next phase on Friday.

Wright recorded Saturday's highest score with a two-wave total of 17.00 to eliminate American Nat Young, whose score of 15.86 would have won all but one of the day's other heats. Endit
