Government forces after recapturing Zebak district in the northern Badakhshan province launched fresh operations in the neighboring Yamgan district to evict militants and restore law and order there, a senior police official Shir Mohammad Kamaqwal said Friday.

"A well-coordinated offensive launched late Thursday night against enemies in Yamgan district to smash rebels and restore law and order there," Kamawal told Xinhua.

Government forces after days of fierce fighting recaptured Zabak district Thursday morning and the Taliban fighters, after suffering huge casualties, fled the area, according to officials.

A total of 85 Taliban militants had been killed in fight for the control of Zebak district, officials said.
