Shootout between villagers and armed gang kills 8 in southern Mexico

Xinhua, May 11, 2017 Adjust font size:

Eight people have died in a shootout between an armed gang and villagers in Mexico's southern state of Guerrero, the state government announced Thursday.

Guerrero's security spokesperson Roberto Álvarez Heredia said the clash took place early Wednesday morning between members of a local drug gang and the villagers of La Gavia community.

Five gang members and three villagers were killed in the fight and four villagers were injured, the statement said.

Regular violence in Guerrero and other Mexican states has forced villagers to form vigilante groups to fight back against drug cartels.

Government data shows that Guerrero has been the deadliest state in Mexico since 2015, mainly due to over 20 criminal gangs fighting for control of the drug trade there. Endit
