Suspected murderer of Hamas leader arrested

Xinhua, May 11, 2017 Adjust font size:

Chief of Islamic Hamas movement, Ismail Haniya, said on Thursday that the suspect, who killed a senior Hamas militant in March, was arrested.

Haniya told a news conference held in Gaza city that the suspect, who murdered Mazen Fuqaha, confessed to the crime.

"The occupation (Israel) gave the instructions to murder Fuqaha," Haniya said.

On March 24, Fuqaha was shot dead at the entrance of a building southeast of Gaza City.

The movement said in a short text message to reporters after Fuqaha was killed that the collaborators of the Israeli occupation shot him dead.

Fuqaha was released under the Egyptian-brokered prisoners' swap deal reached in October 2011 between Israel and Hamas.

Fuqaha was originally from town of Tubas in the West Bank. He was responsible for the killing of nine Israelis in 2002 in revenge for the assassination of a senior Hamas leader in Gaza.

There has been no immediate Israeli army response to Hamas accusations that it stands behind the killing of Fuqaha. Endit
