Comey tells former colleagues not to spend time on his dismissal

Xinhua, May 11, 2017 Adjust font size:

Former FBI director James Comey told friends and former colleagues not to spend time on his dismissal or the way it was executed, U.S. media reported Wednesday.

"I'm not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed. I hope you won't either," Comey said in a farewell letter.

"I have long believed that a president can fire an FBI director for any reason, or for no reason at all," he said.

Comey expressed sadness for leaving the bureau and asked FBI staff to continue protecting the American people.

Comey was fired Tuesday by President Donald Trump, after Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Comey was unfit to lead the FBI in a letter to Trump.

The decision came as a shock to many and has drawn a wave of criticisms from Democrats, who suggested Comey was fired for investigating possible collusion between Trump's inner circle and Russia. Endi
