Brazil's 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina advanced to the third round of the Rio Pro on Wednesday by defeating countryman Jesse Mendes in the World Surf League event.

Medina posted a combined-wave score of 14.20 compared to Mendes' 10.66 at the beach break in Saquarema, around 100km east of Rio de Janeiro.

"I have competed against Jesse since we were little so we know each other well," said Medina, who revealed he is still battling the effects of a knee injury.

"I'm happy to have won. I'm taking more risks and I'm going to keep improving as the season progresses," the 23-year-old added.

Just four heats were completed on Wednesday before the competition was suspended due to poor conditions.

The other heats were won by Brazilian Yago Dora, and Australian pair Owen Wright and Matt Wilkinson. Endit
