Argentinean musical group wins Spanish humanities award

Argentinean musical comedy group Les Luthiers were on Wednesday named as the winners of the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.

The group was chosen over 27 other candidates as the jury decided they were "one of the main communicators of Ibero-American culture from a artistic and humorous viewpoint".

The jury also highlighted Les Luthiers' "original treatment of language, the musical instruments they use and their actions on stage", which helps to convert them into "a critical mirror and a reference point for freedom in contemporary society".

The Communication and Humanities Award are currently in their 37th year and aim to reward "the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out at an international level by individuals, institutions or groups of individuals or institutions".

They cover a series of categories which also include literature, social services, technical and scientific research, international cooperation, concord and sports.

The award winners receive a cash prize of 50,000 euros (55,000 U.S. dollars) and a sculpture from Spanish artist Juan Miro in a ceremony which is held in the city of Oviedo (northern Spain) every October. Endit
