A Chinese envoy on Tuesday urged the international community to speed up the global poverty reduction process.
All parties need to "strive to realize the goal of poverty reduction with a renewed sense of urgency," said Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the United Nations.
Institutions such as the United Nations and the World Bank must continue to play their important roles, Liu told a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The international community needs to pay attention to the financing needs of the developing countries; the developed countries must "provide debt relief and market access to developing countries, so as to help them tackle development challenges, said the ambassador.
Liu also said that the international community needs to support the developing countries in following a path of development that they have chosen themselves and that best suits their conditions.
"The international community needs to help the developing countries integrate further into the global supply chain, industry chain and value chain, thus giving new impetus to the global poverty reduction endeavor," he added.
Liu said that over the past period of more than 30 years, the Chinese people have found a path toward poverty reduction with Chinese characteristics.
"We have persisted in reform and opening up, maintained a rapid pace of economic growth, adopted numerous policies and measures favorable to the development of poor areas and people living in poverty," he said.
In the meantime, China has maintained the leading role of the government, incorporated poverty reduction and development in its overall national development strategy, he said.
"We have mobilized the participation of the whole society and leveraged the advantage of our national system, creating a coordinated approach to poverty reduction that involves the government, the society and the market."
In four years, China will lift all people out of poverty, thus realizing the poverty reduction goal of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development in 2020, said the ambassador.
