Wilson makes dashing start at Rio Pro

Australian surfer Julian Wilson posted the best score on the opening day of the Rio Pro on Tuesday with a sublime performance in the final heat.

The 28-year-old registered 16.34 points from his best two waves in choppy conditions at the beach break in Saquarema, around 100km east of Rio de Janeiro.

"I felt like I surfed a good heat and it was fun," Wilson said. "That was a good wave and I was able to put an exclamation point on it, you know, it was a good challenge."

Wilson's compatriots Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and Josh Kerr also won their heats, as did defending world champion John John Florence of Hawaii.

Brazil's 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina disappointed his legion of local fans by losing the first heat of the day to Nat Young of the United States. Endit
