Violence erupt in U.S. airport as stranded travelers vent anger at airline

Xinhua, May 9, 2017 Adjust font size:

Fist fights erupted in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport Monday evening as canceled Spirit Airline flights angered hundreds of stranded travelers, according to cell phone footages surfaced Tuesday.

Video pictures showed a large number of travelers as well as security personnel scuffling near Spirit Airline ticket counters, after eight Spirit flights out of Florida airport were reportedly canceled.

Passengers were said to have been waiting for hours at the airport.

The airline blamed the flight cancellations to an ongoing labor dispute with its employees, who are arguing for better contracts.

"We sincerely apologize to our customers for the disruption and inconveniences they have suffered. We believe this is the result of intimidation tactics by a limited number of our plots affecting the behavior of the larger group," the airline said in a statement in response to the incident.

The issue remain unsolved Tuesday as flight monitoring groups said 28 flights from Spirit were canceled, in addition to more than 300 canceled flights since early May.

U.S. air industry recently suffered from a series of ugly incidents, including the horrid episode where a United Airline passenger was beaten bloody and dragged off a plane in April. Enditem
