Pakistan summons Iranian envoy over army chief's remarks

Xinhua, May 9, 2017 Adjust font size:

Pakistan on Tuesday summoned Iranian ambassador to convey concerns over remarks by Iran's army chief that Tehran would hit "terrorists" inside Pakistan if it can not secure its borders.

Major General Mohammad Baqeri on Monday issued the warning some two weeks after 10 Iranian border guards were killed in clashes near the Pakistan-Iran border.

The Sunni militant group Jaish ul-Adl (Army of Justice), which is fighting for independence in Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province, had claimed responsibility for the attack.

"The Iranian ambassador to Pakistan was called to the Foreign Office today for conveying Pakistan's concerns over the reported remarks of the Iranian Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces regarding cross border actions," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"It was conveyed to the Iranian Ambassador that such remarks were against the spirit of brotherly relations existing between the two countries," the statement said.

"The Iranian side was urged to avoid issuance of such statements that could vitiate the environment of fraternal relations," the statement added. Endit
