UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has congratulated French President-elect Emmanuel Macron on winning the presidential election, said a spokesperson here on Monday.

Macron, the 39-year-old former minister of economy, won the 2017 runoff French presidential election on Sunday.

"We congratulate the people of France of the successful presidential election yesterday and President-elect Emmanuel Macron on his victory," UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a daily briefing.

"France is a founding member of the UN and a permanent member of the Security Council and a highly valued partner of this organization," said Dujarric

"The secretary-general will be writing to the president-elect very soon to congratulate him and looks forward to engaging with him in the very near future," he said. Endit
