An Egyptian court on Monday sentenced the top leader of the Muslim Brotherhood group to life sentence over charges of murder and violence, official news agency MENA reported.
The Cairo Criminal Court reduced an original death verdict to Mohamed Badie, the Brotherhood's supreme guide, as well as five prominent figures of the group, after their appeal was accepted.
Life sentence in Egypt means 25 years in jail.
Another 15 defendants received sentences of five years imprisonment, and further 21 defendants were acquitted of all charges, including Justice and Freedom Party official Mourad Ali, and spokesperson of the Brotherhood Gehad Al-Hadad.
The case has been publicly known as "Rabaa operations room," which dates back to August 2013, following the ouster of the Islamist leader Mohamed Morsi, when the defendants were accused of giving orders from the Rabaa sit-in to spread nationwide chaos.
Most of the Brotherhood group leading figures, including former President Mohammed Morsi, have received verdicts varying from death sentence to years in jail over violence and killing accusations. Endit
