Two cyclists killed and three injured by drunken driver

Two cyclists were killed and three injured on Sunday morning after being hit by a car driven by a man who later tested positive for both alcohol and drugs, the Spanish media reports.

The accident happened between the towns of Oliva and Deina, close to Alicante on the east coast of Spain, at around 8.30 am local time, when the car, which was driven by a 28-year-old man, ploughed head first into a group of six cyclists belonging to the Javea Triathlon Club.

Two cyclists died in the accident with three injured with the local health authorities reporting that two of the injured were in a serious condition, with one of them "very serious," while the third person is less badly hurt.

Emergency services, including the fire-brigade and ambulance services were directed to the scene and the most seriously injured rider was airlifted to hospital in Valencia, while the other two injured were taken to hospitals in Denia and Gandia.

No further details of the victims or the driver have yet been released, other than the fact he failed controls for consuming both alcohol and drugs and his details have been passed to the court in Gandia. Endit
