European Union (EU) chiefs were elated as centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron chalked up a landslide victory on Sunday in the runoff vote of the French presidential election.
"Congratulations @EmmanuelMacron! Happy that the French chose a European future," Juncker tweeted in French, minutes after polling agency projections showed that Macron won the race by a large margin.
"Congratulations @EmmanuelMacron. Congratulations to French people for choosing Liberty, Equality and Fraternity over tyranny of fake news," European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted.
"Congratulations to @EmmanuelMacron Counting on France to stay at Europe's heart, changing our Union together to bring it closer to citizens," European Parliament President Antonio Tajani tweeted.
"The France chose to invest in the future. Ready to work with @EmmanuelMacron and reinvigorate our Union. Long live the France, long live Europe!" EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini tweeted, also in French.
Macron won Sunday's runoff vote of the French presidential election, defeating his far-right rival Marine Le Pen, according to polling agency projections issued after the vote.
An estimation by research firm Elabe for BFMTV show that Macron won the presidential race with 65.9 percent of the vote, while Le Pen scored 34.1 percent.
Other estimations also indicate that Macron garnered between 65 to 66.1 percent of votes, and Le Pen between 33.9 to 35 percent. Endit
