Palestinian attempts stabbing soldiers, shot by police : Israel

Israeli police said they shot and wounded a Palestinian who ran and shouted toward them with a knife in Hebron city of the West Bank on Thursday morning.

The incident took place near a checkpoint outside a holy site in Hebron amidst a wave of violence between Palestinians and Israelis. The site is known to Muslims as Ibrahimi Mosque and to Jews as the "Cave of the Patriarchs."

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said that the suspect is a man in his twenties, a resident of Hebron. "He was wounded and taken for medical care," she said.

Samri added that he rushed toward paramilitary Border Police officers who were guarding a checkpoint in Hebron, waving a knife. In response, the force shot and wounded him.

He also carried a dummy gun with him, Samri said.

Some 1,000 Jewish settlers live in Hebron under heavy military guard among tens of thousands of Palestinians.

Violence throughout the West Bank and Israel has claimed the lives of at least 245 Palestinians, 41 Israelis, two U.S. nationals, a Jordanian tourist, a British tourist, and two African asylum seekers. Endit
