Gun battle leaves 7 militants dead in Afghan northern province

At least seven Taliban fighters including the group's key commander Mawlawi Qadir had been killed in northern Afghanistan, local police said Thursday.

According to police chief Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani in the northern Takhar province, five villages have also been cleared from the Taliban insurgents over the period.

More than 60 Taliban fighters have been killed and more than 40 others sustained injuries over the past one week in the crackdown against militants in Khawja Bahawdin district in adjoining areas week ago, the official contended.

Possible number of government forces casualties has remained unknown and Taliban outfit has yet to make comment. Endit
