Well-known Australian ultra runner Mina Guli on Wednesday called for more attention to be given to a UN sustainable development goal on clean water in a bid to tackle the water crisis worldwide.
Guli made the appeal here at the UN headquarters after she finished her six rivers run expedition on Sunday. The running campaign aims to raise awareness about the goal to ensure access to water and sanitation for everyone.
Over six weeks, Guli has run along the Colorado River in the United States, the Amazon in Brazil, the Murray in Australia, the Yangtze in China, the Nile in Egypt and the Thames in the United Kingdom.
Guli said that the trip was an exploration of water during which she had seen by herself a lot of problems related to water consumption and pollution and had been trying to galvanize support from all walks of life to deal with the problems.
She also said what she has done was "a small bucket in a very big problem" and she will keep advocating and raising awareness about water issues by running.
In 2015, 193 UN member states adopted a set of global goals to end poverty, promote equality, and combat climate change. Among them, the goal 6 demands universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all people by the year 2030.
The goal also asks for increased water-use efficiency, integrated water resources management and protection for water-related ecosystems across the world. Endit
