AU decision-making body discusses security, funding issues

Xinhua, May 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Members of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council on Wednesday started a three-day retreat in Rwanda's capital Kigali, where they will discuss security matters as well as funding mechanisms for peace efforts.

The council's chairman Mull Sebujja Katende said the retreat will review ways to make the council deliver better, and will also discuss funding mechanism of peace and security activities, and specific issues that need immediate attention.

He said all 15 members of the council will look at restive security situation on the continent in countries such as Somalia, Burundi, South Sudan and DR Congo in May.

The council is the AU's standing decision-making body responsible for the maintenance of continental peace and security. Rwanda was elected to the council for a period of two years in January last year.

All the council members are elected by the AU Executive Council on regional basis with three countries from Central Africa, three from Eastern Africa, two from North Africa, three from Southern Africa, and four from West Africa. Endit
