The Philippine stock market succumbed to profit takers on Thursday ahead of the long weekend.

The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index slipped by 0.85 percent or 65.44 points to 7,661.01, while the broader all-share index lost 0.73 percent or 33.60 points to 4,579.20.

Trading volume reached 1.62 billion shares worth 5.75 billion Philippine pesos (116 million U.S. dollars) with 72 stocks advancing, 122 declining, and 52 were unchanged.

MUMBAI -- The Indian market closed lower Thursday ahead of the crucial expiry in April series of derivative contracts.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 30,029.74, 103.61 points or 0.34 percent down compared to its previous close at 30,133.35.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index on Thursday moved down 0.70 points or 0.04 percent to close at 1,566.77 points.

Some 7.65 billion shares worth 33.30 billion baht (about 970 million U.S. dollars) changed hands.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Thursday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,767.92, down 1.00 points or 0.18 percent, and the Emas was at 12,613.49, up 3.12 points or 0.26 percent.

Turnover decreased to 3.44 billion shares valued at 2.77 billion ringgit Malaysia (638.24 million U.S. dollars), compared with 3.55 billion shares valued at 3.13 billion ringgit Malaysia (717.88 million dollars) on Wednesday.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 2.4 points, or 0.08 percent, to close at 3,171.36.

A total of 1.82 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1.09 billion Singapore dollars (783.03 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered decliners 255 to 207.

The STI index gained 9.83 points, or 0.31 percent, to close at 3,173.76 on Wednesday.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 89.32 points on Thursday, up 0.76 points or 0.86 percent against the previous trading session.

A total of over 56.823 million shares worth some 570.394 billion Vietnamese dong (some 25.24 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, an increase of 9.3 percent in volume and 6.1 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 120.05 points, or 0.49 percent, to 24,698.48 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,455.12 and 24,717.44. Turnover totaled 76.31 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 9.81 billion U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 716.53 points on Thursday, up 6.49 points, or 0.91 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 187.184 million shares worth 4.109 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (183.87 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as investors opted to take profits after the market's recent winning streak and following a U.S. tax reform plan unveiled that lacked details.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 37.56 points, or 0.19 percent, from Wednesday to end the day at 19,251.87.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 0.74 point, or 0.05 percent, to finish at 1,536.67.

SYDNEY -- The Australian market on Thursday closed slightly higher with mixed results across the sectors.

At the close of trade, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 9.50 points or 0.16 percent at 5,921.50, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 7.60 points or 0.13 percent at 5,944.40.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) inched up 1.62 points, or 0.07 percent, to settle at 2,209.46. Trading volume stood at 379 million shares worth 6.6 trillion won (5.8 billion U.S. dollars).

South Korea's currency finished at 1,130.1 won against the greenback, down 5.0 won from the previous close.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished higher on Thursday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange Index up 0.02 point, or 0.01 percent, to close at 343.91 points.

A total of 17,350 shares worth 74.37 million riel (18,473 U.S. dollars) were traded.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Thursday, down 0.72 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index decreased by 7.51 points to reach 1,029.02 points after closing.

A total of 203,700 shares worth about 1.03 billion Lao kip (nearly 126,216 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market. Endit
