Tokyo stocks closed higher Wednesday as investor sentiment was bolstered by an upward trend in overseas equities, with a weaker yen lifting exporters and buoying the broader market.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 210.10 points, or 1.10 percent, from Tuesday to end the day at 19,289.43, marking its highest closing level since March 21.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 18.20 points, or 1.20 percent, to finish at 1,537.41.

Oil and coal product, rubber product and nonferrous metal-related stocks comprised those that gained the most by the close of play, with advancing issues outnumbering declining ones by 1,655 to 294 on the First Section.

On the main section on Wednesday, trading volume came to 2,035.53 million shares, rising from Tuesday's volume of 1,948.68 million shares.
