Record numbers are expected to start the 2017 London Marathon Sunday morning after more than 40,000 registered for the race over the last four days, organizers announced here on Saturday.
It said in a statement that a total of 40,382 accepted applicants had registered to start the race, following last year's record field of 39,523, meaning the 37th London Marathon is on track to become the biggest.
With the weather expected to be near ideal for marathon running, the 2017 race is on course to beat the record figure of 39,140 runners who completed the event in 2016.
Among those competing for the crown will be Ethiopian distance running legend Kenenisa Bekele, the second quickest man ever over the gruelling distance, and Mary Keitany, the Kenyan going for her third London Marathon crown, plus men's and women's world champions, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie and Mare Dibaba.
Prince Harry will present trophies to the top three finishers and the World Para Athletics Marathon World Cup racers. Endit
