A series of armed attacks on civilian population in South Sudan's eastern state of Boma early this week have left at least 55 civilians killed, 20 others injured and over 8,000 displaced, a local government official said on Thursday.

John Achon, Boma State Minister of Information told Xinhua that armed men loyal to the rebel group SPLA-IO carried out several raids in the areas of Nanam, Kongor and Lukongole late last week until Tuesday. (South Sudan-Attack-Boma)

PARIS -- One police officer was killed, and two others severely injured in a shooting incident Thursday evening on the Champs Elysees shopping street in Paris, authorities said.

UNITED NATIONS -- The UN Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned the most recent ballistic missile launch conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

In a press statement, the 15-nation council demanded the DPRK to immediately cease further actions in violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, saying that the council would closely monitor the situation and "take further significant measures including sanctions." (UN-DPRK-Missile)

TEHRAN -- Iran's high legislative body, namely Guardian Council of Constitution, on Thursday released the names of six candidates for the upcoming presidential election and disqualified the former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The qualified candidates can now start their election campaigns until 8 a.m. May 18, the Interior Ministry said in a statement, according to the Press TV. Iran's presidential election is slated for May 19. (Iran-Election-Candidates)

WASHINGTON -- China is still embracing open trade, as the country has lifted millions of people out of poverty through engaging more and more in trade, said World Bank President Jim Yong Kim on Thursday.

Despite the rising protectionism sentiment, China continues to trade with all of its trading partners and work with Latin America, said Kim. He expected China's trade with these countries to go up further in the future.
