Indian police bust terror module, arrest 3 suspected IS militants

Xinhua, April 20, 2017 Adjust font size:

Indian police on Thursday claimed to have busted a major terror module and arrested three suspected Islamic State (IS) militants on charges of terror conspiracy.

A joint team of Delhi Police's special cell and the anti-terror squad of neighboring northern state of Uttar Pradesh's Police arrested the three IS suspects from Jalandhar town in the northern state of Punjab, Bijnor town in Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai.

"We conducted raids in various places across the country and arrested the trio from the three different places since Wednesday night. They were arrested for hatching terror conspiracies," Additional Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police Daljit Chaudhury, told the media.

Police said the three arrested are part of an IS module that was looking for potential recruits in the states of Bihar in the east, Rajasthan and Maharashtra in the west, and Uttar Pradesh.

"The arrests were made following a tip-off by intelligence agencies which were tracking the suspected IS militants for the past one month. Six more people have been detained for interrogation, but not arrested," said another official, on condition of anonymity.

He added "After interrogation, we will decided whether to hand over the arrested IS suspects to anti-terror National Investigation Agency."

The arrests came more than a month after Uttar Pradesh police claimed to have killed a militant and arrested six others, all of whom were allied with an IS-inspired group that planned a train blast in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh that injured 10 people earlier in March.

In the past one year, India's anti-terror National Investigation Agency and police of various states have arrested about 60 Indian-origin IS recruits before they could carry out attacks. These men were part of at least seven modules, which couldn't carry out attacks. Endit
