European Defence Agency launches projects to improve bomb detection

The European Defence Agency (EDA) on Wednesday said it launched projects to improve the capabilities in countering improvised explosive devices (IED) threat.

Around 40 government representatives as well as military, industrial and research experts have kicked off three new projects in Vienna, according to an EDA statement.

The projects will be run within the EDA's IED detection program, in order to develop multi-sensor detection systems for countering IED in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway and Poland.

Researchers will detect indirect indicators of IED's by using forward looking camera systems, and also develop new unmanned ground vehicle technology to detect IED components.

Countering IED was confirmed as a top priority in the EDA capability development plan revision of 2014. Endit
