Brazilian policemen invade Congress to protest late retirement plan

Brazilian policemen invaded the Congress building Tuesday to protest a social security reform that would postpone their retirement.

The invasion led to a conflict with Congress security officers, who used pepper spray and smoke bombs to halt their advance. There were no reports of injuries.

Police trade unions claim that the reform did not take into consideration the fact that policemen have a much more risky career and a lower life expectancy than other public servants.

The social security reform that President Michel Temer's administration is trying to push is highly controversial, and has been criticized for several aspects, especially the minimum retirement age of 65 years old, regardless of how many years citizens have worked. Endi
