Chinese envoy calls for favorable international environment for conflict prevention

A Chinese envoy Tuesday called on the international community to make efforts for building a more favorable environment for conflict prevention.

Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, made the remarks at a Security Council debate on the topic of maintenance of international peace and security.

Liu said the goal for conflict prevention is to build well with universal security, and therefore all nations should establish the concept of common community of shared future and advocate global governance by engaging a wider consultation and making joint contributions.

In this regard, he noted that the international community shall build a global partnership that is based on dialogue rather than confrontation and alliances.

"It is necessary to coordinate and maintain security in conventional and non-conventional fields, advance sustainable security with sustainable development so as to eliminate causes of conflict," he added.

In addition, Liu said disputes between countries need to be addressed appropriately through dialogue and consultations.

"The goal for conflict prevention is to realize peace. Any non-peaceful means is undesirable," said Liu.

"All countries need to abide by the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, follow the basic norms governing international relations, such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, non-aggression and peaceful settlement of disputes," he said.

Liu highlighted the importance of eliminating root causes of conflict through promoting sustainable development and enhancing mutual understanding as well as exchanges between civilizations.

He also appealed to give full play to the roles of regional and sub-regional organizations to exercise their geographical and cultural advantages to make greater contributions to conflict prevention in the region. Enditem
