Uproar in Indian Parliament over bounty on head of West Bengal's chief minister

Xinhua, April 12, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Indian Parliament Wednesday witnessed massive uproar over the announcement of a bounty of a million rupees (17,000 U.S. dollars) on the head of the Chief Minister of the eastern state of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, by a member of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Members of Banerjee's regional Trinamool Congress party as well as members of other opposition parties condemned the announcement and demanded action against Yogesh Varshney, chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing, for the announcement of the bounty.

Varshney issued the threat against Banerjee after police in West Bengal broke up a rally recently to celebrate Hindu god Hanuman's birthday.

According to media reports, police in West Bengal had refused to issue permission for Sunday's rally in Birbhum town, 180km from state capital Kolkata, and forcibly broke up the procession, led by BJP's youth wing leader, when it tried to enter a Muslim-dominated area.

Varshney accused Banerjee's government of targeting Hindu devotees. "Whoever comes to me with the severed head of Mamata Banerjee, I will reward him with over one million rupees," he said Tuesday. Endit
