Indian markets closed lower Wednesday as investors maintained cautious stance ahead of earnings season that will kick off by Infosys on Thursday.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 29,643.48, 144.87 points or 0.5 percent down compared to its previous close at 29,788.35.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 11.26 points, or 0.35 percent, to close at 3,186.01.

A total of 2.37 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1.39 billion Singapore dollars (995 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered decliners 236 to 228.

The STI index lost 6.7 points, or 0.21 percent, to close at 3,174.75 on Tuesday.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Wednesday at 5,646 points, down 37.08 points, from Tuesday's finish.

Among a total of 327 issues traded, 120 registered gains and 170 incurred losses while 37 remained unchanged.

Total turnover decreased to 7.15 billion taka (about 87 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday from 7.83 billion taka (about 95 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,744.08 up 8.24 points or 0.47 percent, and the Emas was at 12,440.74 up 48.67 points or 0.39 percent.

There were 427 gainers, 506 losers and 349 counters traded unchanged.

Turnover declined to 4.02 billion shares valued at 2.40 billion ringgit Malaysia(541.52 million U.S. dollars), compared with 4.23 billion shares valued at 2.57 billion ringgit Malaysia(579.61 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 89.91 points on Wednesday, down 0.72 points or 0.8 percent against the previous trading session.

A total of over 54.248 million shares worth some 586.821 billion Vietnamese dong (some 21.98 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, a decrease of 58.76 percent in volume and 68.42 percent in value against the previous trading session.

Prices of 61 stocks went up; 117 stocks fell down, while 83 stocks remained unchanged.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 725.58 points on Wednesday, down 5.75 points, or 0.79 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 249.510 million shares worth 4.334 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (194.96 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 94 stocks went up, 169 stocks fell down, while 45 stocks remained unchanged.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 225.04 points, or 0.93 percent to 24,313.50 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 23,994.13 and 24,313.50. Turnover totaled 71.839 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 9.245 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday with the benchmark Nikkei stock index falling to a four-month low as geopolitical concerns sent the yen higher versus the U.S. dollar and weighed on exporters particularly as well as the broader market.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 195.26 points, or 1.04 percent, from Tuesday to end the day at 18,552.61, marking its lowest close since Dec. 7.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 5.06 points, or 0.24 percent, to settle at 2,128.91. Trading volume stood at 405.1 million shares worth 3.8 trillion won (3.3 billion U.S. dollars).

South Korea's currency finished at 1,141.4 won against the greenback, up 4.4 won from the prior close.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market has remained firm at the close on Wednesday, with losses in the telecommunications sector not enough to drive the index into the red.

At the market close, the S&P/ASX200 main index was up 4.7 points, or 0.08 percent, to 5,934 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index was also up 4.3 points, or 0.07 points, to 5,968.9 to close the day. Endit
