Bangladesh, Myanmar agree on joint efforts to remove landmines from border areas

Border forces of Bangladesh and Myanmar have reached a consensus to work jointly to remove land mines and and other unexplored ordnance from their respective border areas.

It was decided in a six-day border conference held between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Myanmar Police Force (MPF) that concluded here Thursday.

To establish good border management both the countries agreed to take necessary steps, said a press release jointly issued by BGB and MPF on Thursday.

Brigadier General Md Anisur Rahman, BGB additional director general, told journalists in a press briefing that they cannot go to some border areas inside Bangladesh as mines and explosives are buried there by separatist groups and others.

The high-level border conference formally started on Sunday at the BGB headquarters in Dhaka.

The meeting discussed various issues, including the killing of innocent Bangladeshis along the border and trespassing Bangladesh territory by Myanmar nationals.

The conference also held discussions on smuggling of drugs from Myanmar.

According to the BGB official, both the countries decided to exchange information in this regard and conduct anti-drug smuggling operations on their respective sides.

He said BGB has given its Myanmar counterpart a list of spots in the border areas from where drugs are smuggled into the country. Endit
