Hong Kong stocks closed up 139.32 points, or 0.57 percent to 24,400.80 points, on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,166.01 and 24,400.80. Turnover totaled 102.537 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 13.196 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Wednesday following a strong lead from Wall Street overnight and a halt in the yen's appreciation, but market consternation was stoked by the firing of a ballistic missile by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea before markets opened.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 51.02 points, or 0.27 percent, from Tuesday to end the day at 18,861.27.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 2.51 points, or 0.08 percent, to close at 3,176.55.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed flat on a positive note Wednesday as investors sat on the fence ahead of Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) monetary policy meeting on Thursday.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 29,974.24, 64.02 points or 0.2 percent up compared to its previous close at 29,910.22.

SYDNEY -- The Australian market ended in positive territory on Wednesday with strength coming from the materials sector.

At the close of trade, the S&P/ASX 200 index was up 19.60 points at 0.33 percent at 5,876.20, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 20.10 points or 0.34 percent at 5,915.90.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended almost unchanged on Wednesday.

MANILA -- The Philippine stock market managed to technical break out of a crucial resistance level on Wednesday ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting.

The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index jumped by 1.85 percent or 132.72 points to 7,584.21, while the broader all-share index rose by 1.15 percent or 51.21 points to 4,511.77.
