France's far-left Melenchon viewed as strong performer in second presidential debate: poll

France's hard-left presidential candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon was viewed as the winner of the second televised debate on Tuesday night among the 11 candidates vying for the Elysee Palace, a snap survey showed.

Melenchon, 65, an outsider on a hard-left platform "Unbowed France" which he said meant restoring power in the country, was viewed as the most convincing by 25 percent of voters, Elabe pollster said.

Emmanuel Macron, already the presidential front-runner, convinced 21 percent viewers, it added.

Conservative Francois Fillon came in the fourth place with 15 percent ahead of far-right leader Marine Le Pen with 11 percent.

The survey showed Macron having the best program of all 11 candidates with 23 percent against Melenchon's 22 percent.

France's two-round presidential election will be held on April 23 with the run-off scheduled two weeks later. Endi
