More students, professionals caught for drug offences in Singapore

Xinhua, April 4, 2017 Adjust font size:

Singapore sees increasing number of students and professionals caught for drug offences over the years, said Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam on Tuesday in response to drug issues in Parliament.

Local media reported that 151 Singaporeans and permanent residents studying in primary to tertiary public educational institutions were caught for drug offences last year. This is higher than 124 in 2015 and 83 in 2014.

Moreover, the number of professionals or managers caught also increased from 50 in 2015 to 70 in 2016.

Unlike in the past, drug abusers are getting younger, better educated and holding good jobs.

Shanmugam said the authorities will be revising its strategy and be more specific in combating drugs.

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) will launch the United Against Drugs Coalition later this month to encourage healthy lifestyle among the younger generation.

Shanmugam emphasized that education remains the first line of defense against drugs as young people are heavily influenced by peers and environment. Endit
